Why I Play

I am a 31 year old mother named Letia, aka Sephare, and I like to play medieval.  When I met my husband in 2005 we quickly discovered one of the things we had in common was a love of the past, particularly the middle ages.

As a young man my husband played in a group called The Society of Creative Anachronism - commonly referred to as the SCA.  You may have heard of the society as its rather large, internationally large actually.  We're the crazy people most commonly known for wearing armor and whacking each other with sticks in parks.  If you are not one of us odds are you are saying a) "Awesome where do I sign up!" or b) "Wooooow.  What is up with that?"  I was in the "a" category from the time I was first introduced to the SCA in high school, but being a busy teen I quickly lost track of it.

The truth (as I know it anyway) is that the society is a great place for social, artistic, athletic, and historical undertakings.  If it happened then we try to bring it to life again now, whether its things like building a catapult or learning a bread recipe from the twelfth century.

The glory of the SCA is the ability for it to be personalized to each person.  My family of three has been playing for roughly five years now, we have a small child, and are wanting another, but that doesn't keep us from enjoying ourselves.  My brother is a single guy just getting into it and finding his niche.   I have friends that have been playing for years and do everything from painting to sewing to cooking to fighting.

I consider myself a dabbler, specifically with Arts, and while I really love to show my work, I sometimes get a little turned around in finding assistance with it - that's why I decided to start this blog.

I will be linking a lot of different sites (because while I am a jack of all trades I'm certainly a master of none!) for other artisans I have found particularly helpful and amazing.

I am hoping these pages will become filled with helpful tips for the newcomer, fun crafts for the fantasy artisans, ren fans, or LARPers, maybe decorations for your house, or simply an answer to a few crazy questions about a club that some don't even know exist.  I am by no means an expert in the society or in many of the arts discussed briefly in these articles.

Take care and be safe!  Enjoy!
